What is a Cone Beam CT Scan?

A cone beam CT scan (CBCT) is a type of X-ray imaging technology designed for high-resolution, bone window imaging of the sinuses, temporal bones, and skull base. The scan can help clinicians accurately diagnose a variety of sinus-related diseases and aid in surgical planning for maxillofacial surgery (Max-Facs).

What makes our CT scan unique?

Offering peace of mind with a lower radiation dose, our MiniCAT™ sinus scan has a lower radiation dose than sinus scans performed by a full-body conventional CT scanner. Our technology also provides immediate access to images at the patient’s point of care, resulting in a faster diagnosis and treatment.

What is a cone beam CT scan used for?

ENT and oral maxillofacial specialists utilise high-resolution, contrast-rich images to accurately diagnose a range of problems in the head and neck region, including:

  • Pre-cancerous and cancerous lesions: Detection of abnormalities in the head and neck region.
  • Sinusitis: CBCT can reveal inflammation, blockages, or abnormalities within the sinus cavities, aiding in the diagnosis of acute or chronic sinusitis.
  • Sinus polyps: These soft, noncancerous growths can obstruct the nasal passages and lead to symptoms such as congestion, facial pain, and reduced sense of smell.
  • Sinus cysts or tumours: CBCT scans can detect the presence of cysts, benign tumours, or malignant tumours within the sinuses.
  • Sinus fractures: CBCT scans assess facial trauma or identify fractures in the bones surrounding the sinuses, such as the maxilla or frontal bone.
  • Dental applications: CBCT is also used in dental implant planning and other dental-related diagnostics.

What happens during a CT scan and how long does it take?

The ENT specialist will comfortably position the patient in the scanner while they remain seated. The machine will then rotate around the head within a short time frame, taking multiple X-ray images. The entire scan is quick, usually taking only 20 to 30 seconds.
