What is Dizziness?

Dizziness is a complicated symptom because it means different things to different people and can be due to a wide range of disorders beyond the ears themselves. These include conditions of the ear, blood pressure, neck, brain, medications and general wear and tear, with ageing.

What is the cause of Dizziness?

A number of disorders of the ear can cause dizziness, particularly if associated with hearing loss and tinnitus and therefore patients with this symptom require careful and detailed clinical evaluation.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a common condition whereby short-lived acute episodes of dizziness are elicited by specific head movements, classically turning over on bed.  This can be easily diagnosed using Hallpike’s test in the clinic setting and then effectively treated by specific movements of the head, the Epley or Semont manoeuvre.
