Dizziness is a complicated symptom because it means different things to different people and can be due to a wide range of disorders beyond the ears themselves. These include conditions of the ear, blood pressure, neck, brain, medications and general wear and tear, with ageing.
A number of disorders of the ear can cause dizziness, particularly if associated with hearing loss and tinnitus and therefore patients with this symptom require careful and detailed clinical evaluation.
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a common condition whereby short-lived acute episodes of dizziness are elicited by specific head movements, classically turning over on bed. This can be easily diagnosed using Hallpike’s test in the clinic setting and then effectively treated by specific movements of the head, the Epley or Semont manoeuvre.
The ear specialists at OneWelbeck Ear, Nose & Throat Clinic have extensive experience of managing the dizzy patient and will undoubtedly be able to help and advise you. With certain causes of dizziness, surgery may be the only solution and you will be advised by our experts if this is the case.
