Personal Biography

Professor Paris Tekkis (BMed.Sci., BM BS, MD, FRCS), qualified from Nottingham University in 1994. His postgraduate training was at St Mark’s Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital in London and at the Cleveland Clinic, USA.

He was appointed as Clinical Senior Lecturer and Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at St Mary’s Hospital and Imperial College in 2004. He was promoted to Reader in Surgery and appointed at The Royal Marsden in 2008, and promoted to Professor of Colorectal Surgery in 2011.

He is the Chairman of the ‘Beyond TME (total mesorectal excision) Collaborative’ responsible for the publication of International Guidelines for the multidisciplinary management of advanced rectal cancer.

He is also known for the development of The UK National Bowel Cancer Audit  and has supervised over 35 MD /PhD studentships.

Within the NHS, he holds consultant posts in London: The Royal Marsden Hospital; Chelsea & Westminster Hospital; and formal Senior Academic position at Imperial College London.

Professor  Tekkis is a dedicated researcher, his current research areas are:

  • Robotic colorectal surgery
  • Laparoscopic colorectal surgery
  • Advanced rectal surgery
  • Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease
  • Anal diseases & HIV-related anal conditions

Prof Tekkis has received a variety of awards, including:

  • Hunterian Professorship, from the Royal College of Surgeons of England
  • David Dunn Medal, from the Association of Endoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland
  • Piedmont Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons’ Award, from the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons
  • Eugene Bricker 2014 Award, from the Society of Pelvic Surgeons
  • Honorary civilian consultant advisor in colorectal surgery to the British Army

As of 2020, he has published over 385 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals and contributed to 30 books. He has given over 350 presentations and has lectured in over 35 countries.
