Mr Achan is a former clinical director at Barts Health NHS Trust, current programme director of the Percivall Pott Orthopaedic Training programme, and convenor for several training courses at Barts & The Royal London and Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore.
His practice focuses on lower limb joint preservation surgery, arthroscopic intervention, primary, complex primary and revision joint surgery. Where he uses the latest surgical techniques to maximise function with the least disruption or loss of your own tissues.
In 2009, Mr Achan was one of two upcoming ‘Best of British’ surgeons chosen to represent the British Hip Society Travelling Fellowship to the USA.
Personal biography
Mr Achan graduated from St Bartholomews Hospital Medical School, in 1993.
He undertook his first house officer jobs at Barts, spending three months on the Professorial Surgical Unit, and three months in the orthopaedic department – where he developed his love for orthopaedics.
He went on to work as a senior house officer in Hillingdon, Banbury, at St George’s in Tooting on the Pelvic Trauma Unit, before moving to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and working for Professor Rolfe Birch on the Peripheral Nerve Injuries Unit.
He obtained his fellowship in surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England, in 1998; before working as a trauma fellow at the Royal London Hospital.
In 1999, he was appointed on to the prestigious Percivall Pott Training Programme under Hugh Phillips. He trained with Professor George Bentley on the Professorial Unit at RNOH Stanmore, before working at the Royal London Hospital, Great Ormond Street, The Princess Alexandra Hospital Harlow, The Norfolk & Norwich Hospital and finally back at the RNOH as senior registrar on the Bone Tumour Unit.
He obtained his fellowship in orthopaedics and trauma, in 2004, from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. And also completed fellowships in trauma at the Hospital for Joint Diseases NYU in New York and in Arthroplasty on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia with Ray Randle.
Mr Achan was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Barts and the Royal London Hospitals NHS trust, in 2005. Later becoming clinical director orthopaedics here, for eight years.
He is currently course convenor for several of the Barts & The London FRCS Basic Science Revision Course Faculty, for the RNOH, Stanmore courses.

He is also honorary senior lecturer at the Institute of Cancer and involved with research at Queen Mary University, The William Harvey Institute and The Trauma Clinical Academic Unit.
