About Professor Shern Chew

Professor Shern L Chew is a Consultant Endocrinologist at OneWelbeck specialising in endocrine disorders. He was previously professor of endocrine medicine at St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry – one of the largest NHS practices for endocrinology in the UK, and co-founded the Endocrine Department at the London Clinic in 2002.

Professor Chew has been recognised with a number of awards throughout his career, most notably for ‘quality in endocrinology’ from the European Union of Medical Specialists. He was responsible-examiner at St Bartholomew’s and Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry; and examiner at the Royal College of Physicians.

In 1982, Professor Chew graduated with a distinction in anatomy from Leeds University, followed by a distinction in medicine from Cambridge University, in 1985. He undertook his postgraduate training at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London; University Hospitals Leuven, Belgium and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, USA.

In 1992, he was awarded a MRC training fellowship by the Medical Research Council, and an advanced fellowship from the Wellcome Trust, in 1995. He was appointed a consultant endocrinologist in 1995 at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London.

He became a reader in Endocrinology, Barts and the London (SMD) in 2002 and then professor of endocrine medicine there, in 2004.

Research Highlights

In 2006, Professor Chew won first prize in the Endocrinology BMA Medical Book competition for clinical Endocrinology and Diabetes (Churchill Livingstone; co-authored with Professor David Leslle). He was also awarded the Charles and Iris Book prize and the Sir Lionel Whitby medal.

Professor Chew’s research laboratory at Barts investigated mRNA splicing in endocrine systems, and clinical research was into genetic endocrine syndromes.
