Overview

Mr Matthew Solan is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at OneWelbeck Orthopaedics. He has established and runs the UK’s first ‘one-stop’ clinic for heel and ankle problems, at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

About Mr Matthew Solan

Mr Matthew Solan is programme director for orthopaedic surgery training throughout Kent, Surrey and Sussex; and established and runs the UK’s first ‘one-stop’ clinic for heel and ankle problems, at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

He is a visiting professor at London South Bank University and visiting lecturer at Surrey University; he also runs instructional courses on key-hole ankle surgery for sports injuries.

He has special expertise in the painful big toe and is part of the international team pioneering Cartiva surgery. He has also pioneered the use of minimally invasive muscle release surgery and shock wave therapy for chronic heel pain.

Mr Matthew Solan (FRCS (Tr&Orth)), graduated from St Thomas’ Hospital Medical School, in 1992; and completed his general surgical training in London, Guildford and Oxford.

He undertook his specialist orthopaedic training in the south Thames (west) region.

Mr Solan was awarded a British Orthopaedic Travelling Fellowship to Dublin and has also worked overseas in South Africa, and at the universities of Johns Hopkins and Maryland, Baltimore, USA.

In 2003, he was appointed as a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Frimley Park Hospital. He was then appointed to the Royal Surrey County Hospital, in 2006.

Between 2012 – 2017, he was chairman of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society Scientific Committee.

Mr Solan is very active in research and training, having produced 20 scientific publications in the last five years alone, on a broad range of themes; with a particular interest in the treatment of intractable heel pain.
