Areas of Expertise
Dr Lim performs a range of treatments, including:
- CardioInsight™ multi-electrode vest mapping
- Complex devices
- Implantable cardioverter defibrillators
- Implantation of pacemakers
- Tilt table testing
- Ablation for atrial and ventricular arrhythmias
Some of the conditions he commonly treats are:
Dr Boon Lim, MB BChir (Hons), MA, MRCP, PhD, IBHRE, started his education in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He won a prestigious scholarship to read medicine at Cambridge University, where he graduated with a double first class honours degree, in 2000.
He completed his medical training at Cambridge University Medical School, in 2003, before rotating through the King’s College London, Oxford, and north west London rotations in medicine and cardiology.
In 2007, he was awarded a clinical research training fellowship by the British Heart Foundation, to complete a PhD at Imperial College London in clinical electrophysiology, exploring the role of the autonomic nervous system in atrial fibrillation. This culminated in him winning the President’s Medal at the Royal Society of Medicine for his work.
His interest in the autonomic nervous system led to him training in the field of syncope or ‘blackouts’, and he is now considered one of the leading national experts in this area. Amongst other distinguished roles, he is the British Cardiovascular Society reviewer for the European Society of Cardiology Guidelines on syncope.
Following his PhD, Dr Lim pursued a clinical fellowship at the Heart Hospital, University College London for a year, before being appointed as a consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist, and clincal lead for the Imperial Syncope Diagnostic Unit at the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, in 2013.
As well as his notable work with syncope, he is at the forefront of using new technologies in mapping and ablation of arrhythmias. His work on these novel technologies has led to several important publications which describe the first-in-man usage of these technologies such as using the multi-electrode vest to map ventricular arrhythmias (CardioInsight vest).
Dr Lim is also a passionate educator and trainer. He is an honorary senior lecturer at Imperial College, London; and regularly lectures nationally and internationally and speaks at patient events organised by charitable organisations such as STARS and Arrhythmia Alliance.
He supervises several PhD students and has presented over 60 peer-reviewed publications and over 200 abstracts at both national and international conferences.
He is also looking at innovative ways to deliver healthcare and education, and is developing a training platform to educate the next generation of trainees in electrophysiology.
Research and Awards
Dr Lim research interests are in mapping and improving catheter ablation techniques for atrial fibrillation, and developing novel strategies to treat vasovagal syncope; improving the quality of life for patients with recurrent blackouts.
His latest research focuses on:
Dr Lim has been awarded several prizes for his research, including the top prize President’s Medal for Cardiology at the Royal Society of Medicine, the Lindo Foundation Prize at St Mary’s Hospital, and Runner-up in the Young Investigator Award for the British Cardiovascular Society, and Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society Meetings.
