Why you might need?

What is tap water iontophoresis?

Tap water Iontophoresis is a drug free treatment for hyperhidrosis of the hands and feet. It involves passing a small electrical current into skin that is immersed in a tray of water.

How does it work?

It is not known exactly how the treatment works but it is thought that the electric current and mineral particles in water combine to form a physical plug to block sweat ducts. Sweating can be reduced for several days.

What does the treatment involve?

At OneWelbeck we have the latest iontophoresis machines and our expert nurses will teach you how to use them. During the appointment, jewellery will be removed and any cuts covered with paraffin. Your hands or feet will be immersed in a small tray of water. An electrical current will be turned on to a level at which you are comfortable. It is best to build this up over a couple of sessions. The treatment usually takes about 20 minutes. If it helps your condition, you can buy a machine to use at home.

What are the side effects?

A tingling sensation is common. Redness and skin softening can occur. The electric current is not strong enough to cause a harmful shock but a mild burn can result if metal parts are touched during the treatment.  It is not recommended during pregnancy or if you have certain medical conditions such as epilepsy, heart arrhythmias, a metal device (such as an intrauterine contraceptive device or pacemaker).

Treatment Info

What is Botox?

Botox is a drug that can be used to treat hyperhidrosis affecting the armpits.

How does Botox work?

Botox works by blocking the release of a chemical from the nerves that trigger sweating. It starts to work within a week and lasts an average of 6 months. Treatments can be repeated.

What does the treatment involve?

Botox is injected just below the skin surface using a tiny needle. You will receive several injections in a grid like pattern. It only takes about 15 minutes to complete the treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Some people find the injections painful. This can be reduced by a numbing cream or cold air. There can be temporary bruising or redness. Rarely, the treatment is not effective.  It is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or have certain medical conditions such as myasthenia gravis. These will be discussed with you before any treatment.
