What is a Thyroid Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is an imaging technique using high frequency sound (high enough that it is not audible and is able to pass through the body) to produce anatomical images of the body.

An ultrasound of the thyroid is painless and uses sound waves to produce pictures of the thyroid gland within the neck to identify the appearance of lumps or thyroid nodules and can be performed by an experienced dedicated head, neck and thyroid radiologist.

For most patients, we perform a ”one-visit” diagnostic service where you will have these investigations and be told the results on the same day and often during the same clinic visit.

When would we use a Thyroid Ultrasound?

If you have any problems with your throat or voice box, are suffering from a thyroid lump or a thyroid function test is abnormal, your doctor may recommend an ultrasound to assist with diagnosis.

What are the alternatives to a Thyroid Ultrasound?

Instead of an ultrasound scan, a CT or MRI scan can provide additional information if there is suspicion of thyroid cancer or if there is a very large thyroid gland.

Additionally, a radioactive iodine-based scan may help assess whether any nodules are producing excess or little thyroid hormone.
