What is a men’s health check?

A men’s health check involves assessments and diagnostic tests that give an overview of your general health and wellbeing, at different stages of your life.

Delivered in our purpose-built Men’s Health centre, our Men’s Health Check package takes a holistic approach and focuses on prevention rather than cure, screening for multiple health conditions and can detect early signs of disease. Our specialists will also support you in optimising your lifestyle choices, helping you stay in control of your health at every step.

What does a men’s health check involve?

At Welbeck, our Men’s Health Check package is delivered by our leading consultants and expert nurses. Our package is tailored to you, taking into consideration you rage, lifestyle, and family history, and includes:

  • an initial assessment – this may involve measuring your body mass index (BMI) and blood pressure, as well as going through your medical history, medications, and family health. This initial appointment usually lasts around 1 hour

  • urine and blood tests – these are taken to evaluate various factors, such as testosterone levels, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, kidney and liver function, cholesterol, lipids, glucose, HBA1C for diabetes, and calcium/phosphate levels

  • ultrasound and urine flow rate – dependent on the outcome of your consultation

  • an electrocardiogram (ECG) – a test that looks at the electrical activity of your heart to check for problems

Further tests are available for an additional fee, if needed, including:

  • bowel screening – to check for signs of bowel cancer or pre-cancerous polyps

  • an echocardiogram (echo) – a type of ultrasound scan that looks at the structure of the heart and nearby blood vessels to check for conditions like heart failure and endocarditis

Our dedicated team of nurses and consultants will carry out all necessary tests on the same day, all under one roof. If you would prefer to have a male consultant and nurse carry out your consultations and tests, please let us know and we will arrange this.

Results are usually available within 5 working days, and a report will be compiled by your consultant. They will use your results to develop a treatment plan if needed, which they’ll discuss with you at a follow-up consultation.

What men’s health conditions do we treat?

Our men’s health specialists provide a personalised health screening for multiple health concerns, many of which may be interconnected. These include:

  • fertility issues, including erectile dysfunction

  • prostate conditions, including an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer

  • kidney, thyroid, or bone issues, including kidney disease

  • liver infections, such as hepatitis

  • high cholesterol

  • diabetes

What are the risks of a men’s health check?

Men’s health checks are very safe, with no side effects.

How to prepare for a men’s health check

You’ll need to fast before some of your blood tests to ensure all results are accurate. This means no eating or drinking anything except water for 8 to 12 hours before you arrive. Specific fasting periods can differ, so make sure to check when booking your appointment.

48 hours before your PSA blood test, you shouldn’t:

  • have anal sex
  • ejaculate
  • do anything that leaves you out of breath, such as exercise

These can increase your PSA levels, which could make the test less accurate.

It can also be helpful to keep a diary of any symptoms you notice in the weeks leading up to your appointment, and bring this to your consultation.

Try to make a note of any symptoms and:

  • when they happen
  • any triggers you’ve noticed
  • how severe they are

Recovery and aftercare

There’s no recovery time or aftercare needed with blood and urine tests, bowel screening, or heart tests. You’ll be able to return to normal activities straight away.

FAQs

Why is a men’s health check needed?

Everyone has a chance of developing certain health conditions, especially as they get older. For men, these commonly include fertility issues, some cancers, prostate conditions, kidney problems, heart disease, and diabetes. A men’s health check can help identify your risk for these conditions earlier, and improve your chances of living a healthier life.

How often should men get their prostate checked?

A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test can help pick up prostate cancer before any symptoms develop. Prostate cancer mainly affects men over the age of 50, with risk increasing as you get older. Testing every 2 to 3 years is enough for most men, although there are no specific guidelines on this.

How do you know if you have low testosterone?

The only way to know if your testosterone level is low is through a blood test. Not everyone will notice symptoms, but low sex drive, fertility problems or erectile dysfunction may be good indicators.

What can I do to stay healthy?

Aside from regular screenings, making certain lifestyle changes can improve your health and reduce your risk of developing specific conditions. Depending on your test results, your consultant will make a personalised plan and discuss this with you. They might suggest things like eating a balanced diet, exercising often, and not smoking.
