This service is also available to paediatric patients aged 12-18.
Private Home Video Telemetry
Home video telemetry is an at-home version of an electroencephalogram (EEG) test. It records your brain activity and captures videos of any seizures or attacks, providing an overall view of your brain function.

What is home video telemetry?
Home video telemetry (Home VT) is an electroencephalogram (EEG) test combined with video recording, which is carried out in the comfort of your own home. The EEG measures your brain’s electrical activity (brainwaves), giving doctors an overview of how your brain is working, while the video records physical disturbances. You’ll take the equipment home for 1 night to help capture any typical attacks or seizures.
Home VT may be recommended to gain a better understanding of your brain function. It’s useful for both general assessment and investigating specific problems, such as blackouts and seizures. At Welbeck, this test is offered by our specialists in our dedicated Neurology centre.
Paediatrics
We’re able to offer appointments to referred paediatric patients aged 12 to 18. For full information on our paediatrics service, please visit our main Paediatrics page.
What does home video telemetry involve?
Home video telemetry involves wearing EEG sensors on your head to record your brain waves, along with a small video recorder that captures your movements and behaviour.
Once the equipment has been fitted during your appointment, you’ll take the equipment home, usually for 1 night. The recordings gathered allow your consultant to see what happens during your normal routine, sleep, and if you experience attacks or seizures.
The setup takes around 30 to 45 minutes. Small disposable electrodes will be gently attached to your scalp with a water-soluble paste after cleaning your skin with a gritty gel.
Additional electrodes will be placed on your shoulder to record your heart rate. Please let the physiologist know if you have any allergies to latex or plaster tape before doing the test.
Once the electrodes are in place, the recording of your brainwaves will commence. The physiologist will ensure that all equipment is functioning correctly, after which you may return. You must not drive yourself, so you should arrange transport.
Using the equipment at home
On the day of your appointment, you’ll be shown how to use the equipment and given full instructions. Key points include:
- placing the video camera in a safe, stable position, away from children and pets
- keeping the camera plugged into the mains power so it stays charged
- making sure you’re clearly visible on camera
- pressing the record button as instructed
- pressing the event marker as soon as possible to flag an event (another person may do this for you if needed), and note down each event in the diary provided
- not showering or bathing during monitoring – the equipment must not get wet
- remaining at home for the duration of the recording
Please remember that the video camera will be constantly recording, so you must make any family members or visitors, including children, aware that they will be recorded if they are in view of the camera.
What are the risks of home video telemetry?
Home video telemetry is very safe. For some patients, there’s a risk of mild skin irritation and allergic reaction to the electrodes.
How to prepare for home video telemetry
You should continue to eat and take your medication as usual unless you’ve been told otherwise, and bring a list of your current medications to your appointment.
Please ensure that your hair is clean, freshly washed, and free of any hair products, as this will facilitate efficient recording of your brainwaves. As the equipment prevents you from pulling clothes over your head, it’s best to wear a button-up or zip-up top.
Recovery and aftercare
The electrodes may be removed by yourself, and the equipment should be returned at the time of your next appointment. You may resume your normal activities immediately. A minimal amount of paste may remain in your hair; however, it can be easily removed with shampoo and warm water.
Your results will be available within 5 working days. Once reviewed, your consultant will discuss the findings with you and whether any treatment is required.

FAQs
Will the test hurt?
No, the test is painless. The electrodes may feel a little uncomfortable when they’re attached, but this is only temporary.
Who will see the video recordings?
The recordings will be reviewed solely by your physiologist and consultant neurophysiologist. Video clips of any seizures or typical episodes captured will be retained, while those without any recorded events will be deleted.
When will I get the results?
Results will be available within 5 working days, and your consultant will review the findings with you during a follow-up appointment.
What should I do if a seizure occurs at home?
