What is a Doppler test?

A Doppler test is a non-invasive imaging scan that uses ultrasound to assess blood flow in the body. It works by emitting sound waves that bounce off moving blood cells, allowing your consultant to measure the speed and direction of blood flow. This test helps diagnose a wide range of conditions, from cardiovascular issues to circulatory problems.

There are two main types of Doppler devices:

Clinical Dopplers – These are used in hospitals and clinics by trained medical professionals. These advanced machines provide the highest quality and most detailed and accurate readings.

At-home Dopplers – Often marketed for pregnancy, these allow parents to listen to a baby's heartbeat. However, they lack the precision needed for medical diagnostics and should not replace clinical assessments. We advise against purchasing Dopplers online to use at-home, as medical training is required for safe and proper use.

What is a Doppler test used for?

Doppler tests are used to evaluate blood circulation and detect a range of medical conditions and abnormalities such as:

  • Blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

  • Blocked arteries (arterial occlusion)

  • Aneurysms

  • Poor valve function in the limbs

  • Decreased blood circulation in the legs (peripheral artery disease)

  • Heart valve defects and congenital heart disease

  • Narrowed veins or arteries, such as carotid artery stenosis

  • Tumours in blood vessels

  • Vascular disorders (conditions of the blood vessels)

  • Erectile dysfunction

  • Complications in pregnancy

Dopplers are sometimes used in place of MRIs and X-rays as they are non-invasive, quick, and free from radiation exposure.

The Doppler test procedure

At OneWelbeck, Doppler scans are performed by our consultants. During an initial consultation, your consultant will assess your medical history and symptoms. They may need to perform a Doppler scan to confirm or make an accurate diagnosis.

The test is straightforward, quick and painless. Your consultant will apply a gel to your skin and then move a handheld probe over the area to assess blood flow. The scan usually takes between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the area being examined.

At OneWelbeck, a Doppler test can often be performed on the same day as an initial consultation. However, depending on the area of the body being scanned, you may need to fast (not eat or drink) before the test as well as quit smoking and not use nicotine products for at least two hours before. You may, therefore, need to book an appointment to have your scan on another day.

Doppler tests for pregnancy

A Doppler ultrasound scan in pregnancy is used to check fetal blood circulation and ensure that the placenta is supplying enough oxygen and nutrients to the baby. It’s used to help diagnose potential complications such as fetal distress or restricted growth.

At OneWelbeck, Doppler tests during pregnancy are performed in our Women's Health Clinic by our expert obstetrics, gynaecology and urogynecology team.
