Teen Gynaecology Services FAQs
Our expert team of nurses and doctors are specially trained in looking after children and young people. They take a caring and personalised approach at every appointment so you feel as comfortable as possible whenever you visit us.
At your first appointment, we’ll get to know you and discuss what’s been going on with your health. There’s plenty of time for you to ask any questions, and we’ll make sure you feel listened to, supported, and understood.
Depending on what symptoms you have, we may ask if we can do some tests. This might include taking some blood tests and doing an examination of your pelvis (vagina). If you don’t feel ready to have an examination, that’s okay. We can make another appointment once you’ve had time to think about it and ask any questions.
If you’d like to have a parent, guardian or friend in the room with you, that’s absolutely fine. If you’d rather talk to your doctor alone, that’s okay too. If there’s something you’d like to talk about in private, we can also ask the person with you to leave the room for a few minutes and then come back.
We can also provide a chaperone, who is another healthcare professional who’s specially trained to be present during appointments and procedures. They will act as your advocate and ensure you feel comfortable at all times. Unfortunately, parents cannot act as chaperones – our clinical staff are trained to a high standard to act as your advocate.
Yes. At OneWelbeck, we provide local anaesthesia for certain procedures as standard. For example, if you’re visiting us for coil insertion, a local anaesthetic gel can be used to numb the area, and an injectable local anaesthetic can also be given.
If you’re having a pelvic (vaginal) examination, pain relief and anaesthetic are not usually required. However, we can use a virgin (smallest available) speculum (a smooth, plastic medical tool used to open the vagina) to minimise any discomfort.
If you’re feeling nervous or anxious, let your doctor or nurse know - they’ll do everything they can to make sure you’re comfortable and happy. If required or requested, pain relief is also available.
It’s completely normal to feel a little nervous or embarrassed. If you’re feeling worried about asking certain questions or sharing what’s been going on with your health, it can be helpful to write these down on a piece of paper before your appointment. When you meet your doctor, you can either read out what you’ve written or pass them your notes to read themselves. You can also ask to speak to the nurse before your appointment if you have any concerns or anything you want to discuss before you see your doctor.
It’s important to remember that no question is silly and that our doctors are here to support you with any concerns you have, no matter how big or small.
Your comfort is the most important thing to us. We only carry out physical examinations of the pelvic region (vagina) when absolutely necessary, and with your consent.
If we do need to perform an examination, we’ll explain every step to you before we start, and there will be plenty of time for you to ask questions and discuss the procedure with your doctor. You can also ask your doctor to stop at any time during the examination.
Yes, we can perform a physical examination and ultrasound at any point in your cycle, including when you’re on your period. If we need to do a blood test to look at your hormone levels, you may have to come back at another time, as being on your period can affect the results.
