Professor Fausto Palazzo is a Consultant Endocrine Surgeon at OneWelbeck, specialising in thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgery.

He is clinical lead of the UK’s largest department of endocrine and thyroid surgery at Hammersmith Hospital and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. He lectures undergraduates and postgraduates both nationally and internationally. Professor Palazzo also sits on the board for a number of endocrine societies and councils in the UK and overseas and has been involved in the creation of guidelines in all aspects of endocrine surgery. He has acted as an adviser also to patient support groups and to NICE on parathyroid surgery.

As of 2022, Prof Palazzo has carried out more than 4700 thyroidectomies, parathyroidectomies and adrenalectomies – making him one of the UK’s most experienced thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal surgeons.

He qualified in 1992, and trained first as a general surgeon in West London and Essex, before becoming a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1997. After spending two years as an endocrine surgical research fellow at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, he developed a specialist interest in endocrine surgery.

He undertook specialist endocrine surgery training in Oxford, Sydney (Australia) and France, and was awarded a Master of Surgery by the University of London for a thesis on autoimmune thyroid disease. He was then added to the UK specialist register in 2004.

Professor Palazzo took up his current post as Consultant Endocrine Surgeon at Hammersmith Hospital, in 2005, and since 2006 has been the clinical lead consultant in endocrine surgery at that Trust.

He has been on the executive board of the British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons, as well as UK delegate to the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons and is currently on the Council of the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons. He has also recently been an advisor on the guidelines for the treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism for NICE.
