What is a spirometry lung function test?

If you’ve been experiencing breathing difficulties or have symptoms that could suggest a lung condition, a spirometry lung function test is a simple and effective way to understand what’s going on.

It helps us diagnose any issues, measure how much your lungs might be affected, and monitor how your condition changes over time. Whether you’re starting treatment or want to see how well it’s working, or even if you need to check your fitness before surgery, this test gives clear, reliable insights.

At Welbeck, this test is managed by our respiratory specialists in our state-of-the-art Lung Health centre. The process is straightforward and pain-free, so you can take control of your lung health with confidence.

What does a spirometry lung function test involve?

A spirometry lung function test at Welbeck is a straightforward, comfortable process designed to give you clear answers about your lung health.

Here’s what to expect:

  1. You’ll be seated comfortably, and a small clip will be placed on your nose to ensure you're breathing only through your mouth.

  2. You’ll be asked to take a deep breath in, then seal your lips tightly around a mouthpiece connected to the spirometer.

  3. When ready, you’ll blow out as hard and fast as you can until your lungs feel empty.

  4. This process is usually repeated at least 3 times to ensure the most accurate results.

  5. In some cases, you may be given an inhaler or medicine and asked to repeat the test, so we can see if your breathing improves.

  6. The entire test typically takes around 30 minutes, and you’ll be guided through each step by our specialist team, ensuring you feel at ease throughout.

What are the risks of a spirometry lung function test?

Spirometry lung function testing is generally very safe and well-tolerated. Some people may feel light-headed, dizzy, or tired during or shortly after the test due to the repeated deep breaths and forceful exhalations required. Occasionally, the test can trigger coughing, which is normal and usually passes quickly.

Our trained physiologists ensure the test is conducted in a safe and supportive environment, guiding you throughout and monitoring for any discomfort. There are strict hygiene protocols in place to minimise any risk of infection, including thorough cleaning of equipment and use of disposable filters.

How to prepare for a spirometry lung function test

There's no preparation needed ahead of having a lung spirometry test. If anything is required, your consultant will instruct you before your appointment.

However, spirometry may not be suitable if you have certain health conditions such as unstable heart problems, recent surgery, or severe respiratory issues. If you have any concerns or specific medical conditions, our team will discuss these with you beforehand to ensure the test is safe and appropriate.

Recovery and aftercare

The test is very straightforward, and there's no recovery or aftercare needed.

How much does a spirometry lung function test cost?

Spirometry is available at Welbeck as a standalone test for £175.

It can also be included in a ‘Bronchodilator Reversibility’ assessment, which evaluates how effectively an inhaler opens your airways. This combined test is offered for £290.
