Why You Might Need CPET

If you are at any fitness level from a normal exerciser to a professional athlete, you can book a CPET heart health screening test appointment using the form at the bottom of this page.

However, if you notice that when you are exercising you have symptoms including:

  • Chest discomfort or pains
  • Irregular or painful heart rhythms
  • Fluttering in the chest
  • Breathing problems or unusual breathlessness when exercising
  • Light-headedness or dizziness during or after exercise.
  • Unusual drowsiness when exercising

You should consult your doctor immediately.

Treatment Information

The CPET test is situated in the OneWelbeck Heart Health and OneWelbeck Lung Health centre. The test evaluates your heart and exercise capacity, which is used to diagnose:

  • Cardiovascular and heart disease,
  • Undiagnosed exercise intolerance involving cardiac and respiratory limitations,
  • Dyspnoea on exertion (breathlessness with exercise),
  • Respiratory diseases,
  • Evaluate exercise and athletic performance.

At OneWelbeck the CPET test is carried out on an exercise bike, so your doctor can get the most accurate information about your heart and oxygen rates in situ.

Screening your heart health is crucial for catching and preventing serious heart conditions, monitoring your heart health, and helping you to continue exercising late on into life.

Treatment Recovery

You can eat and drink as usual. Depending on how you feel you may go about your normal routine or take it easy if you feel tired.

Alternative treatments - VO2max

As an alternative we also offer VO2max testing. VO2max testing is a simplified version of a CPET, that measures your body's maximum oxygen consumption during intense exercise to assess cardiovascular fitness and endurance. The main difference is that VO2max is used as a marker of fitness and is not available as a clinical investigation. Learn more about VO2max testing here.
