Mandy sought relief from severe osteoarthritis in her thumbs, which was impacting her daily life. Read her personal story about undergoing innovative thumb base joint replacement surgery with Mr Sam Gidwani at OneWelbeck Orthopaedics.
I’ve been under Mr Sam Gidwani’s care for about five years after being referred due to osteoarthritis in my hand. When I first saw him, the pain was unbearable. I couldn’t manage daily tasks, like opening jars, typing at my computer, and was struggling to care for my two elderly parents and my son, who is hemiplegic, all while working full-time. The pain made everything extremely difficult.
It was decided to perform replacement surgeries on both my left and right thumbs, starting with the left. Mr Gidwani operated on my left thumb first, and I was his third and fifth patient for this innovative procedure. He was brilliant—he immediately put me at ease. He’s not just a skilled surgeon, but also a kind, compassionate consultant who treats you as an individual and ensures your treatment is right for you.I didn’t need much convincing to go ahead with the procedure, because I trusted him completely.
About eight months later, he operated on my right thumb. True to his word, the recovery involved a cumbersome sling for about six weeks, but it was absolutely worth it. I will admit, I tried to do too much too soon, but now I have full mobility in both hands. I’m so grateful to have been recommended to him. He’s one of those rare doctors who is genuinely human, and I’m incredibly thankful for his care.
The aftercare with both Sam, and also by the hand therapist was fantastic. Mr Gidwani has taken the time to see me personally, rather than passing off to juniors, to check with my recovery. And since the surgeries, I’ve had no pain in my thumbs, which has been a game-changer, especially when caring for my elderly parents. I still see him for check-ups every six months, to check my progress and assess if I require further treatment.
I would absolutely recommend Sam to anyone. When it comes to something as important as your hands, you need a doctor who won’t rush the process. He’ll talk you through everything, and as long as you’re committed to the recovery program, it’s life-changing.
I feel like I’ve gained a friend for life with Sam. He’s personable and treats us like real people. Even the x-ray technicians and hand therapists adore him!
