About Dr Shivani Misra

Dr Shivani Misra is a consultant in diabetes and metabolic medicine at Welbeck Health, specialising in genetic diabetes, early onset type-2 diabetes and unusual type-1 and type-2 diabetes.

She is recognised as a leading influencer in diabetes, and was named European Young Scientist of the Year 2017, by the International Diabetes Federation. She also received the Future Leader Mentorship Award from the European Federation for the Study of Diabetes, that same year.

Dr Misra was awarded a PhD in classifying diabetes subtype from Imperial College London, in 2017, where she is now an honorary research fellow, and active in the postgraduate and undergraduate teaching programmes.

In 2013, Dr Misra set up the MY DIABETES study, which researched the causes of diabetes and found that thousands of patients may have been misdiagnosed because of misconceptions about the role of ethnicity. The study focuses on classifying types of diabetes in people with young-onset diabetes from different ethnic groups, to investigate the question of ethnicity’s impact on diabetes presentation and type.

She is an NIHR clinical champion in Diabetes Stratified Medicine, and in 2020, was appointed as a trustee for the Diabetes Research & Wellness Foundation Charity as well as a member of the Diabetes UK Professional Conference organising committee.
