About Dr Ravishankar Rao Baikady

Dr Ravishankar Rao Baikady is a Consultant in Anaesthesia and Peri-operative Medicine at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK. He specialises in management of major cancer surgeries and also as a peri-operative physician in anaesthesia focussing on pre-operative risk assessment to improve patient outcome after major cancer surgeries.

His research projects include peri-operative anaemia management, cardio-pulmonary exercise testing, Intravenous vs Gas Anaesthesia, Prehabilitation prior to major cancer surgery and evidence based management of major haemorrhage. As a principal investigator Dr Rao Baikady was the lead recruiter among the 45 centres for the recently published PREVENTT (preoperative anaemia management with intravenous iron) clinical trial. He was also part of the team which published two consensus statements on anaemia management in surgery and Association of Anaesthetists in UK and Ireland blood transfusion guidelines. He is a key opinion leader in anaemia management in major surgery.

In addition to research interests, Dr. Rao Baikady actively promotes evidence based practices toward anaemia and haemorrhage management. As part of the patient blood management programme, Dr Rao Baikady initiated anaemia management in cancer surgery with intravenous Iron infusion, blood conservation strategies and education for health professionals. Dr R Rao Baikady has produced journal publications in this area and currently involved in various multicentre research projects.

He regularly organises international educational programmes on ‘Bleeding, Clotting and Haemorrhage’ in collaboration with Association of Anaesthetists in UK and Ireland and ‘Anaesthesia for major surgery’. Dr Rao Baikady regularly delivers lectures and workshops in these areas in international and national conferences. Dr Rao Baikady was also elected council member of Association of Anaesthetists in UK and Ireland from 2016 to 2020. Currently elected board member of NATA (Network of Advanced Transfusion Alternatives).
