About Dr Konstantinos Vakalis

Dr Konstantinos Vakalis is currently serving as a Consultant Cardiologist at OneWelbeck. In this role, he performs complex stress echocardiography, TOE lists, and advanced echocardiographic studies. He runs CT coronary angiography lists. He also leads heart failure and Echo MDTs, and provides imaging support in theatres and the Cath lab.

 

Previously, Dr Vakalis was an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at Ashford and St Peter's NHS Trust, where he managed the stress echocardiography list. He also served as a Clinical Fellow in Echocardiography at Harefield Hospital, where he used a new hybrid stress echo protocol and contributed to achieving European Laboratory accreditation in Advanced Stress Echocardiography (EACVI). Dr Vakalis held the position of Senior Clinical Fellow in Cardiology at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, where he practised general cardiology with interest in imaging. At a Private Medical Centre in Ioannina, Greece, he was running a busy cardiology department and acted as the centre manager.

 

Dr Vakalis obtained his Bachelor of Medicine from the University of Ioannina, Greece, completing his studies in 2004. He has pursued continuous professional development through various courses and certifications. He holds the relevant certifications for Adult Transoesophageal and Transthoracic Echocardiography and CT coronary angiography.

Research Highlights

Dr Vakalis has contributed in many international publications. The most recent was published in the European Heart Journal Imaging Methods and Practice under the title of "Combined low-dose dobutamine and exercise stress echocardiography: a new hybrid protocol to detect inducible ischaemia" (2024), which describes an innovative protocol for stress echocardiography improving the patient’s safety and at the same time increasing the rate of diagnostic studies.
