About Dr George Webster

Dr. George Webster is a consultant gastroenterologist, hepatologist, and Partner at OneWelbeck, specialising in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.

He is the clinical lead for hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) medicine at University College London Hospitals, where he has been a consultant since 2003. He has a large clinical practice in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and receives referrals for specialist care from throughout the UK.

He is Vice President of Endoscopy at the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG), on the Council of the European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE) and is director of the annual London Live Endoscopy course.

Career Highlights:

Dr George Webster has 15 years’ experience as a consultant in one of the busiest gastroenterology centres in the UK, University College London Hospitals.

He gained his medical qualifications at the Royal Free Hospital Medical School in 1991, and then went on to complete his postgraduate training at the Royal Brompton, Hammersmith and Whittington hospitals. He undertook clinical training in gastroenterology, hepatology and endoscopy in London at the Royal Free, Barts, The Royal London and the Middlesex/UCL hospitals, and then in Sydney. He was appointed as consultant in 2003.

He is lead for HPB medicine at UCLH, and his clinical focus is in advanced diagnostic and interventional endoscopy. He has one of the largest lifetime experiences in biliary endoscopy (ERCP) in the UK, and now delivers the largest cholangioscopy practice in Europe (involving the direct visualisation and investigation of suspicious strictures, and the treatment of difficult stones within the bile duct and pancreas).

Dr George Webster partnered with Welbeck Health Partners in 2018 to collaboratively develop the OneWelbeck Digestive Health Centre.

Research Highlights

He is actively involved in clinical research in various areas of gastroenterology, medicine, and advanced endoscopy, and has co-authored national and international guidelines related to primary sclerosing cholangitis, colonic stenting, ERCP practice, and gallstones. He is regularly invited to lecture on these topics in the UK, Europe and the US, and to perform live endoscopy demonstrations both nationally and internationally.

These areas of research have led to improved understanding of disease (e.g. the recognition, diagnosis and management of IgG4-related disease, and the observation that this may mimic malignancy), and in improved delivery of expert endoscopic practice nationally and internationally.

Dr Webster has published more than 70 peer-reviewed medical papers and 15 expert reviews. He is co-author of the Oxford Handbook of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and an author on endoscopy in the forthcoming 5th edition of the Oxford Textbook of Medicine.
