About Dr Deane Halfpenny

Dr Deane Halfpernny treats patients with both acute and established pain, and is particularly interested in helping patients with symptoms which have become particularly troubling, uncontrolled or disabling.

As a gymnast, who previously competed at national level in South Africa, Dr Halfpenny has an keen interest and understanding of pain in sport, and has worked with number of prominent athletes, enabling them to return to competitive sport at international levels.

Dr Halfpenny was also the clinic lead and integral in developing the City and Hackney back pain service. He has also pioneered the use of orthobiologicals in his clinic, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), stem cell treatments and other interventional therapies.

Dr Deane Halfpenny (MBBCh, FRCA, FFPMRCA) graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa (MBBCh), in 1990.

He then went on to complete his specialist training in anaesthesia (FRCA), at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, and was later invited to commence a prestigious lecturing post, which he held for two years. It was while in this post that he conducted his early pain research.

This was followed by a pioneering fellowship in advanced pain management, making him one of the first trainees in the UK to achieve this. This then lead to admission as a fellow to the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FFPMRCA).

In 2001, Dr Halfpenny was appointed as a consultant in pain medicine at the renowned St Bartholomew’s Hospital and the Homerton Hospital.

When assessing his patients, Dr Halfpenny uses a holistic approach. This takes into consideration a patients age, any coexisting medical conditions, their current level of function, lifestyle and personal aims.

Combining this holistic method with collaborating with multidisciplinary teams (such as: physiotherapists, occupational therapists, cognitive psychologists and personal trainers), allows Dr Halfpenny to ensure that his patients’ expectations are realistic and can be achieved.

Outside work, Dr Halfpenny enjoy family life and most sports, in particular cricket, rugby, tennis and skiing. He was awarded Oxford Blues in cricket and rugby, and also played for the Marylebone Cricket Club. He is an active member of the MCC, a rugby coach at Wimbledon Rugby Club (Under 10s) and a Friend of the Royal Opera House.
