About Dr Claudia Maizen
Ms Claudia Maizen is a leading children’s orthopaedic consultant renowned for her compassionate approach and unwavering dedication to her young patients. As an accomplished surgeon based at The Royal London Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust, she delivers top-tier medical care, specialising in the full range of paediatric orthopaedic disorders affecting children of all ages.
Her clinical focus is substantial, with a particularly strong interest in children’s trauma and the comprehensive treatment of neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy. However, her expertise extends far beyond this. Dr Maizen is exceptionally skilled in managing hip conditions such as developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), Perthes disease, and slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE), as well as complex deformities requiring guided growth surgery and treatments for foot and ankle disorders in children.
In her practice, Dr Maizen prioritises non-surgical interventions wherever possible. She takes time with her patients and their families to educate them about orthopaedic care and the potential for non-invasive treatments. Surgery is reserved only for cases where it is deemed absolutely necessary, as she strongly believes that not all orthopaedic concerns warrant surgical procedures. Her comprehensive initial consultations ensure a thorough understanding of each child’s unique situation before recommending effective treatment.
A graduate of the prestigious University Children’s Hospital Graz in Austria—one of the country’s largest paediatric referral centres — Dr Maizen was mentored by the esteemed Professor Graf. Under his guidance, she developed a special interest in hip ultrasound screening and treatment for DDH, co-authoring the influential book Sonography of the Infant’s Hip. Her academic achievements are reflected in her substantial body of work, which includes numerous book chapters and publications in peer-reviewed journals. She also serves as a principal investigator for several multicentre studies and as a reviewer and subspecialty editor in her field.
As a founding and board member of the International Interdisciplinary Consensus Committee for DDH Evaluation (ICODE) and chair of its education committee, she plays an active role in shaping the future of international hip ultrasound training and DDH screening. In addition, she contributes to various professional committees dedicated to promoting excellence in paediatric orthopaedics.
Her passion for education is further demonstrated through her involvement in international teaching, including the prestigious Graf hip ultrasound courses that she organises in London. Beyond her clinical and academic work, Dr Maizen’s humanitarian spirit shines through her outreach in Africa and Mongolia, where she not only provides essential orthopaedic care to children but also trains local surgeons to elevate the standard of care in their regions.
Since joining The Royal London Hospital as a consultant in 2010, Dr Maizen has played a pivotal role in developing a highly regarded paediatric neuromuscular service, including a BTX service for children with cerebral palsy. Embracing a holistic approach, she expertly manages a wide spectrum of paediatric orthopaedic conditions, drawing on her extensive experience in paediatric trauma to meet the complex needs of her young patients. Through her expertise and empathy, Dr Maizen is dedicated to helping children recover, grow, and return to full and active lives. Her profound experience and unwavering compassion continue to drive her commitment to improving the orthopaedic health and well-being of children both locally and globally.
