Dr Alex Kumar is an internationally trained Pain Medicine Consultant with extensive experience in managing both acute and chronic pain conditions. He is an expert in spinal medicine, taking a holistic, goal-based approach that combines interventional pain management techniques, medications, and therapies to support the best possible recovery.
About Dr Alex Kumar
Alongside his position at Welbeck, Dr Alex Kumar holds Honorary Consultant appointments in Anaesthesia and Pain Management at King’s College Hospital and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, where he established the London Major Trauma Pain Clinic.
Dr Kumar qualified from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, and completed specialty training in Anaesthetics and Pain Management both in the UK and overseas. He was selected for Fellowships with the Acute Pain Service at St Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, followed by further training in the management of Chronic Pain at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital in London.
Alex’s expertise lies in the use of Pain Medicine to support rehabilitation, aiming to improve both function and quality of life. He adopts a truly holistic, multidisciplinary approach – tailoring interventions, medicines, and therapies in partnership with each patient. He has particular expertise in Spinal Medicine and advocates for the early multidisciplinary management of disc prolapse to facilitate a rapid return to function.
His time with the Pain Research Group at Imperial College deepened his understanding of pain following major trauma. He continues to publish in this area, with a specific focus on post-amputation pain.
