Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Outpatient Nursing Manager to provide excellent clinical and managerial leadership for the delivery of exemplary outpatient services at our unique, private patient day-case centre and in the on-going development of our world-class patient care. This position will play a pivotal role in overseeing the day-to-day organisation and management of the outpatient consultations, diagnostics and treatment within the outpatient suite, including the management of phlebotomy service. This will require oversight of clinical practice, resource management, clinician engagement, safe staffing provision and financial management, to ensure that the centre meets all regulatory requirements and safety standards. This role is line managed by the Clinical Services Director but will also work closely with the Centre Director as the Registered Manager, Doctor Centre Directors and Clinical Specialty Leads. You will be directly line managing a multidisciplinary team as well as overseeing the service standards provided by other team members who could be self-employed or employed through bank and agencies.

Job Responsibilities

You will work predominantly Monday-Friday around the core hours of 9-6pm, however will need to be flexible to meet the needs of the centre which has extended opening hours and potential for weekend services. This position as Outpatient Nursing Manager is a senior managerial role, providing day-to-day leadership and ensuring high-quality service delivery at the Welbeck Centre as well as working operationally to maintain high visibility for all stakeholders. You will work with the clinicians, senior leadership team and other department colleagues to drive the strategic direction of the centre and develop the services offered by the outpatient department, including phlebotomy, paediatrics, cardiology, audiology and other medical specialties. This role is required to attend and contribute to specialty boards meetings, hospital committees as required and all governance committees that feed into our Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI), including resuscitation, medicines management, Children’s and Young Persons, etc.

Clinical and Professional Leadership

  • Lead the nursing team to deliver evidence-based, compassionate care that meets the individual needs of patients and the wider local community
  • Foster a culture of compassion and respect through effective team engagement, communication, and support
  • Maintain a high visibility within the clinical area and act as a clinical expert within the outpatient setting

Patient Care and Safety

  • Ensure that all clinical staff consistently identify, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised patient care in line with professional standards
  • Support the safe and effective delivery of care by promoting best practice, safeguarding standards, and multidisciplinary working
  • Ensure patient safety is always prioritised, acting as an advocate and speaking up on any concerns regarding care or safeguarding

Workforce Management and Development

  • Attract, develop, and retain a high-performing multidisciplinary outpatient teams, performance management, recruitment, absence management, and appraisals
  • Oversee the training, induction, competencies, supervision, and appraisal process to support continuous learning and professional growth
  • Provide guidance and support to staff, whilst fostering a culture of openness, psychological safety, and professional integrity where staff feel confident to speak up

Operational and Financial Management

  • Ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix to deliver efficient outpatient services through proactive and effective resource planning, scheduling, and coordination
  • Lead on workforce planning aligned to projected activity, ensuring workforce efficiency and balancing contracted and variable staffing
  • Support the development and delivery of business plans, service development initiatives, and departmental budgeting
  • Monitor and manage departmental budgets, ensuring cost-effective use of resources and achievement of financial targets

Governance and Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements (e.g. CQC), professional standards, and Welbeck policies
  • Act as the lead for clinical safety, ensuring systems are in place for incident reporting, investigation, RCA, and learning from complaints or adverse events
  • Drive clinical standards through implementation of evidence-based practice, clinical audits, and quality assurance programmes, ensuring clinical pathways are safe, effective, and continuously improved
  • Lead by example in maintaining infection control, health and safety, safeguarding, data protection, documentation standards, and compliance with governance frameworks

Communication and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Participate in centre wide communication forums including daily handovers, and contribute to strategic and operational decision-making
  • Ensure strong, collaborative relationships with clinicians, RMOs, patients, and families, acting as a key point of contact for escalated concerns
  • Support a culture of customer service throughout nursing services, using patient feedback, satisfaction scores, and complaint trends to drive improvements
  • Represent nursing services within multidisciplinary and business planning meetings, supporting communication across departments and external partners

Strategic Development and Continuous Improvement

  • Lead on the implementation of service developments and business improvement initiatives to enhance performance and patient experience
  • Support the delivery of strategic and operational plans in collaboration with the senior leadership team
  • Participate in the development of business cases and service proposals in line with strategic priorities
  • Lead initiatives that foster a culture of honesty, quality, and safety, underpinned by collaboration and professional accountability

Experience / Qualifications

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration
  • Proven leadership experience in a senior nursing or clinical management role
  • Experience implementing new services and / or new patient pathways in the outpatient setting
  • Strong understanding of clinical governance, patient safety, and health policy frameworks
  • Experience of CQC inspections and/or readiness
  • Demonstrable team management experience within a clinical setting with skills in influencing, coaching and developing others
  • Demonstrable planning and organisational skills including labour management and workforce efficiency
  • Working with IT systems and data analysis, including resource allocation and utilisation tools
  • Ability to lead audits, investigations and quality improvement projects
  • Ability to analyse data and respond to risks

  • Leadership or management qualification (e.g. ILM, MBA, PGCert)
  • Background across a range of specialties in the outpatient or inpatient setting
  • Experience managing outpatient services within private healthcare or NHS environments
  • Commercial awareness and business development
  • Understanding of financial planning, budgeting, and commercial development in a clinical setting
  • Working knowledge of electronic rostering systems and clinical documentation platforms
  • Previous experience of working in partnership with consultants and across clinical teams
