What is pre-conception counselling?

At OneWelbeck, we offer women who are planning pregnancy, soon or in the future, a holistic consultation to help them optimise their health and address any pre-existing conditions.

This consultation aims to optimise your health to boost your chances of conceiving and having a healthy, low-risk pregnancy and birth, and improve the overall health of your child.

This consultation allows you to explore how a pregnancy and any health conditions may affect each other, what medications are safe to continue in pregnancy and how best to plan pregnancy, including contraception advice and support.

Who is pre-pregnancy counselling for?

Our pre-pregnancy counselling service is for anyone planning to have a baby. Whether you’re trying for the first time or already have children, pre-conception counselling can help you plan and prepare for a future pregnancy.

This service offers consultation with experienced obstetricians who specialise in maternal medicine and the care of women with pre-existing and new conditions in pregnancy, to give you peace of mind when planning a family.

What happens at a pre-pregnancy counselling appointment?

At your appointment, your consultant will ask you some questions to gain insight into your priorities for your future, overall health, medical history and lifestyle.

During this consultation, your specialist will develop a personalised plan to optimise your health before pregnancy, including advice on nutrition, optimising any pre-existing conditions, safe medications for pregnancy and family planning if requested.

If you’re affected by any mental health or physical conditions, your consultant will also offer specific pre-conception advice, discuss your care in future pregnancies and consider whether further investigations or referral to specialist colleagues would be helpful.
