Private At-Home SIBO and H. Pylori Breath Tests
Our at-home breath testing service offers a quick, convenient way to investigate your digestive symptoms. A simple kit with clear instructions is posted to you, completed at home, and returned to us for expert analysis — all without needing to visit the clinic.
What are at-home SIBO and H. pylori breath tests?
At-home SIBO and H. pylori breath tests are simple, convenient diagnostic tests that help identify common digestive conditions such as SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), carbohydrate malabsorption, lactose intolerance, and H. pylori infection.
A kit with clear, step-by-step instructions can be delivered to your home or collected after a consultation with a Welbeck specialist. After completing the test, you simply return the samples by post. Our digestive health laboratory will then analyse your samples and send a full report to your clinician.
SIBO breath test
The SIBO breath test measures hydrogen and methane gases in your breath after you ingest a sugar solution. These gases are produced when bacteria in the small intestine ferment sugars. In addition to SIBO, higher-than-expected hydrogen and methane levels may indicate lactose intolerance and other carbohydrate malabsorption problems.
H. pylori breath test
The H. pylori breath test measures how your body processes a urea solution to detect infection with Helicobacter pylori — a bacterium that lives in the stomach lining and can cause gastritis, ulcers, and long-term digestive symptoms. If H. pylori is present, the bacteria break down the urea and release carbon dioxide into your breath, which can be detected and confirms active infection.
Your GP, consultant, dietitian, or nutritionist may recommend one of these tests if you have symptoms such as:
- bloating or excessive gas
- diarrhoea, constipation, or fluctuating bowel habits
- indigestion, upper abdominal discomfort, or nausea
- intolerance to dairy or carbohydrate-rich foods
- persistent reflux
- unexplained abdominal pain
At Welbeck, our digestive health specialists provide expert laboratory analysis of postal breath tests. You’ll receive fast, reliable results and a detailed diagnostic report to guide the next steps in the management of your digestive health, without needing to attend the clinic.
What do at-home SIBO and H. pylori breath tests involve?
Both tests are completed at home using a simple, step-by-step kit which can be sent by post, or collected after your consultation. Each kit contains clear preparation guidelines, instructions for taking your breath samples, and pre-paid packaging for returning your completed test.
An at-home breath test typically involves:
- Following a restricted diet the day before the test.
- Fasting for several hours before beginning the test.
- Drinking a test solution.
- Taking breath samples at timed intervals.
- Sealing and returning the kit by post.
Depending on the test, it can take around 2 and a half hours to collect the breath samples, and it’s best to post the kit back on the same day or the next morning.
Once your sample arrives at our laboratory, our specialists analyse the hydrogen, methane, or H. pylori markers and send a clear diagnostic report to your referring clinician. Your specialist will then discuss the findings and any recommended next steps with you.
What are the risks of at-home SIBO and H. pylori breath tests?
Both breath tests are very safe and non-invasive. You may experience some bloating, discomfort or mild nausea from the test solution, but this usually passes very quickly.
If preparation instructions are not followed correctly, there’s a risk that your results will be inaccurate. It’s essential to follow the preparation guide exactly, and let your clinician know if you had any problems completing the test.
How to prepare for at-home SIBO and H. pylori breath tests
Preparation instructions are provided in the kit and must be followed carefully. If anything is unclear, contact the digestive health team, and they’ll be happy to advise you.
Preparation typically includes:
- a restricted diet the day before
- fasting for a specified number of hours
- pausing certain medications
- avoiding smoking, exercise, or chewing gum before and during the test
Recovery and aftercare
There’s no recovery period after completing the test. Once you take your final sample, you can resume eating, drinking, and normal daily activities straight away.
It typically takes around 10 to 15 days for our laboratory team to analyse your results and write your comprehensive report. This will be sent directly to your referring clinician, who will contact you to discuss your diagnosis and any recommended next steps.
How much do private at-home SIBO and H. pylori breath tests cost?
Postal breath tests cost £380 for SIBO and £250 for H. pylori.

FAQs
Can I have the breath tests at Welbeck instead of doing them at home?
If you’d prefer not to use the at-home kit, you can book an in-clinic breath test at our Digestive Health centre. Just let your referring clinician or our bookings team know. Please be aware that in-clinic testing is priced differently from the postal kits. We’ll provide clear costs before you book.
Will I get my results sooner if I come in for an in-clinic test?
Not usually. Whether your breath test is completed at home or in the clinic, samples are processed by the same laboratory, so the only difference will be the time taken to post the samples. If timing is important, our team can help you choose the quickest option based on kit availability and clinic appointments.
What if I make a mistake while doing the test?
If you make a mistake during the test (such as missing a time point or eating/drinking too early), contact our Digestive Health centre. In some cases, the test may still be usable; if not, they’ll arrange a replacement kit to be sent to you.
Can children take an at-home breath test?
The postal breath test service isn’t suitable for children. Your clinician will be able to advise the most appropriate alternative — this may include an in-clinic test, or a different diagnostic approach that’s better suited to children.
