We are seeking an ambitious and dynamic Phlebotomist / HCA to provide diagnostic services within our Imaging & Diagnostics centre at OneWelbeck.

Whether it's a walk-in appointment or a day surgery visit, our tests and diagnostics comprise of MRI, CT, Standing CT and X-ray imaging. We also have a pathology service offering blood tests for various health concerns, including genetics testing.

  • The Pathology team leader is responsible for the management and coordination of the administrative support services ensuring all systems and processes operate efficiently, accurately and in a timely manner, through a process of continuous improvement.
  • Highly motivated, foresighted, and well organized with a strong sense of patient/customer care are a must. The ability to multitask, work in a team, and work under pressure in what is often a busy environment, is essential.
  • To monitor and improve Quality Standards of administrative services within the administration team and linking in with the wider service regarding administrative standards
  • Contribute to a patient focused service of the highest quality under the supervision of the pathology coordinator.

Job summary:

  • Develop our Centre excellence work with the Pathology team leader to implement initiatives to improve the patient experience.
  • Patient care and Customer Service – provide a broad range of functions and utilizing relevant IT systems to support the delivery of a high-quality patient service

Key results area/main duties and responsibilities:

  • To provide the highest standards and safe practices of care to our patients requiring phlebotomy and other sample collection
  • Deal with patients’ and consultant requests in an efficient and professional manner
  • Perform mandatory daily and weekly checks to ensure all clinical governance standards are adhered to.
  • Ensure accurate records are entered into the patient information system Compucare.
  • Ensure sufficient supplies are always available in the phlebotomy centre, and report any used stock to the phlebotomy leader.
  • Be committed to working flexibly within a dynamic environment, responding to the changing needs of the service.
  • To participate in the evaluation of complaints, incidents and accidents
  • Preparing and despatching of kits, postal packs, and other work within the centre
  • communicating in a friendly, helpful, and non-prejudicial manner in your dealing with staff, clients and/or customers as you will be regarded as a representative of the staff and department!
  • Provide a Phlebotomy service within the Integrated Care System
  • Work under indirect supervision in accordance with defined work rotas and protocols
  • Be competent in the assessment of patients both physically and emotionally, to ensure safety prior to blood samples being taken.
  • Be competent in the selection of the appropriate sample bottle for all common laboratory investigations.
  • Be competent in the procedures required for bleeding high-risk,
  • Be competent in the use of computer software packages associated with the ordering of blood samples.
  • Ensure samples are correctly labelled for transportation to the laboratory.
  • Maintain patient safety through the timely and accurate reporting of any incidents or issues.
  • To pass onto/seek assistance from other colleagues, promptly, any questions that you are unable to resolve.
  • Escalate concerns regarding patients/ staff to Pathology Coordinator
  • Preparing and despatching kits, postal packs, and other work within the centre

Collection of venous and capillary blood samples, body fluids and swabs from patients

  • To be part of the governance schedule at OneWelbeck Imaging and Diagnostics
  • To establish and maintain close and harmonious relationships with all staff to ensure an effective exchange of information.
  • To communicate complex information to patients, relatives and other care workers where persuasive or reassurance skills are required.

  • To effectively communicate with all patients including stressed and distressed patients who are undergoing complicated procedures which are frightening and uncomfortable or may be claustrophobic.

  • Attend meetings within and external to Imaging and Diagnostics as delegated by Senior Leadership group.
  • Communicate at all levels by utilising a wide range of communication techniques (verbal, non-verbal, written, electronic etc.).
  • Manage, defuse, and respond appropriately with verbal complaints and situations of conflict and aggression through knowledge, training, experience, and escalation.
  • Adhere to all General data protection regulations GDPR.
  • To deal with initial complaints from patients, carers or other professionals and refer where necessary to the appropriate CT and General X-ray Superintendent.
  • To observe the Centre’s policy for reporting incidents in a timely manner
  • To produce and implement action plans because of incidents.
