What is a Ferriscan

Ferriscan is a non-invasive test done via an MRI scan that measures your liver iron concentration (LIC), primarily used for patients who may be suffering from liver iron overload.

What is iron overload?

The body can absorb more iron than is required in normal daily usage, and it has no natural process to remove this excess of iron. This can happen in a variety of ways, including when the body absorbs too much iron through diet, or where blood transfusions introduce additional iron. The excess iron accumulates in the organs and tissues of the body, especially in the liver, which can lead to liver fibrosis, cancer of the liver, and death. For the most part, cases of iron overload are the result of genetic conditions such as Sickle Cell Disease, Thalassaemia, or Hereditary Haemochromatosis.

Who is FerriScan suitable for?

This test is best-suited to people who have had blood tests that indicate they may have high levels of body iron, especially if you have:

  • A disease that is more likely to result in iron overload
  • Repeated blood transfusions
  • A genetic predisposition to absorb excessive amounts of iron

How does FerriScan work?

Through integrating our OneWelbeck MRI machines with the FerriScan software, FerriScan provides image analysis of your liver. Abdominal images are captured by the MRI scanner and sent to a central secure server where the images are processed by trained analysts using patented FerriScan software.

Within two business days, a Liver Iron Concentration (LIC) Report is delivered back to OneWelbeck. It includes:

  • Your LIC
  • A table to indicate what the LIC measurement means in terms of your clinical diagnosis
  • A map of the iron distribution across your liver
  • Where available, historical data showing your progress over time
