What is Hypogonadism and what causes it?
Hypogonadism is when your sex hormones are low (testosterone in men and oestrogen in women) and could be due to a primary or secondary cause.
Primary hypogonadism is due to your gonads (testes in men and ovaries in women) not working normally as a result of damage secondary to trauma or medical treatment, removal or aging.
Secondary hypogonadism occurs when the pituitary gland in your brain is not able to produce hormones to stimulates your functioning gonads. Symptoms will include loss of libido, erectile dysfunction (in men), loss of menstruation (in women), lethargy, hot flushes, osteoporosis, abnormal breast growth and infertility. Our specialists will perform blood tests and some patients may need scans to identify the cause and treat the underlying cause, if one is found, with hormone replacement.
Treatment for Hypogonadism
