Interview with Dr Matthew Banks

Dr Matthew Banks; consultant gastroenterologist, founding board member and partner, tells us about the doctor-led set-up here at OneWelbeck Digestive Health.

Can you tell us more about the consultant-led and patient-centred concept at OneWelbeck?
“Having met with a few like-minded consultants frustrated with the obstacles to improving patient care in private practice, our group rapidly expanded with the aim of creating a uniquely consultant-led, patient-centred service of the very highest quality from referral through to discharge.

We wanted to create the ideal patient-centred service utilising the wealth of experience of the whole group. Having led three large endoscopy organisations, I had an understanding of the key quality aspects in relation to patient care.”


What part of this project have you found the most interesting/surprising?
“I found the design of the patient admission and recovery pods fascinating, given the patient-centred research and detail that was required, from comfort, to space, materials, colours and lighting encompassing every aspect of patient care.”


A lot of thought has been put into the website and keeping patients informed. What were you looking to achieve?
“The aims of the website are to enable patients to understand the experience and skills of all our consultants to inform their choice. We have specifically displayed each of our consultants experience, skills and key performance indicators compared to the national levels.

The site also has information co-written by doctors and patients with a simple and informative narrative encompassing all gastrointestinal symptoms and conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux and cancer.

The information on the website also details what our patients are likely to experience before, during and after their procedures, taking them each step of the way – providing understanding and reassurance.”


What is the OneWelbeck app?
“The OneWelbeck allows patients instant access to their appointment details, information about tests, treatments and also their condition, as well as, preparation details and Q&As.

The app is unique to OneWelbeck and allows instant mobile access to dietary information, schedules and experience. For example the colonoscopy section provides location, hour-by hour diet advice, fasting and use of laxatives. New symptoms can cause anxiety and providing information about these symptoms can provide reassurance.”
