Dr Simon Anderson, MD, FRCP, is a consultant physician and gastroenterologist at Welbeck Health Partners and Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. He graduated in 1990 from the University of Cape Town, and then went on to complete his specialist training in liver diseases and intensive care at King’s College Hospital, then gastroenterology and general internal medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital.
He was awarded a Wellcome Institute Research Fellowship and moved on to conduct full-time research at St. Thomas’ Hospital. He was awarded a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from the University of London, in 2004.
He is dual accredited in gastroenterology and general medicine and was appointed as consultant physician and gastroenterologist to Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in 2006; where he leads an acute general medicine firm.
Dr Simon Anderson partnered with Welbeck Health Partners in 2018 to collaboratively develop the OneWelbeck Digestive Health Centre.
Recently completed a study on the effect of exercise in patients with Crohn’s disease. I am now planning a larger multi-centre study using different exercise modalities, specifically high-intensity exercise.
He is also involved on a daily basis with the recruitment and monitoring of patients with inflammatory bowel disease, enrolled in various clinical trials at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital.
Dr Anderson has been published widely on gastroenterological topics, and is a peer reviewer of several medical journals, including GUT and the International Journal of Clinical Practice.

What can you offer your patients at OneWelbeck that is different to other centres?
I am deeply committed to providing the best and safest service to my patients and honestly believe that Welbeck Health is the only unit that is truly able to deliver this.
How will OneWelbeck allow you to treat patients more effectively and offer a better patient experience?
The Centre has been designed around the very latest in endoscopy centre design, not only fulfilling all JAG requirements but also with knowledge of future trends in endoscopic service in mind. It is a big leap forward in endoscopic centre design and will provide an impressively modern, patient-friendly and safe environment for the delivery of the very latest endoscopic techniques.
What are the moments which stand out most in your career so far?
Hosting and mentoring several European students in my department at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital and receiving positive feedback on their experience.
What keeps you busy outside of work?
I participate in a number of endurance events (ultra marathons, duathalon, triathlon, cycling) in the UK and France each year. I usually finish in the top 3 for my age-group in the running and duathlon events. I am also a keen theatre-goer and am a Friend of the Donmar Warehouse, Old Vic and Royal Court.
