Career Highlights

Dr Joel Mawdsley, BA (CANTAB), MBBS, MRCP, MD, is a consultant gastroenterologist at Guys and St Thomas’ NHS Trust.

Dr Mawdsley undertook his pre-clincal studies at Queens’ College, Cambridge. He graduated with a first class honours degree, becoming a foundation scholar and winning the prestigious Max Bull Prize for Medicine. For his clinical studies he moved to Bart’s and the Royal London medical school where he graduated with distinction in clinical pharmacology and merits in clinical medicine and pharmacology.

As a specialist registrar, he trained on the north west Thames gastroenterology rotation spending periods of training at St Mary’s Hospital, Charing Cross and Hammersmith Hospital, St Mark’s hospital and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.  He returned to the Royal London Hospital between 2003-05 as a clinical research fellow. Here, he completed a Doctorate of Medicine on the role of stress and psychoneuroimmunology in inflammatory bowel disease, publishing several high impact papers on the subject.

In 2007, he took up a consultant’s position at the West Middlesex University Hospital where he was based for 10 years. During this time was clinical lead for Inflammatory Bowel Disease and training lead for endoscopy. In 2017, he moved to his current post as a gastroenterologist with a special interest in IBD and is joint clinical lead for the IBD unit.

Research highlights

Dr Mawdsley has taken an active interest in research throughout his career. The IBD department at St Thomas’ places an emphasis on innovation and research and Dr Mawdsley is actively involved in clinical studies relating to understanding the cause and developing new treatments in inflammatory bowel disease. In his previous consultant post, he was the local principle investigator in several National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) registered studies.

Dr Mawdsley was a clinical research fellow in the department of Adult and Paediatric Gastroenterology at Queen Mary College, University of London from 2003 to 2005, under the supervision of Professor David Rampton. His MD project was titled “Psychological stress and hypnotherapy in ulcerative colitis”. It explored the psychoneuroimmunological mechanisms by which psychological stress might adversely, and hypnotherapy might beneficially affect GI inflammation in ulcerative colitis. It generated high impact first author publications and national and international presentations. Dr Mawdsley was awarded his doctoral Master’s degree in January 2008.

  • What keeps you busy outside of work?

    When not working, I like to spend time with his family. I also enjoy running and skiing and I’m very slowly attempting to learn to play the piano.
