Life after Covid-19

As the UK begins to open up again and we can resume some semblance of a normal life, it’s important to remember that over a year of lockdowns and restrictions will have had a physical effect on most people, whether you have directly suffered from Covid-19 or not. Our consultants are on-hand to advise you on how to manage this.

Sport and exercise

If you have contracted Covid-19, it’s essential to take a slow and measured approach when coming back into sport and exercise. The effect the virus will have had on your respiratory system should be taken into consideration, and be wary of pushing yourself too hard.

For the wider population who’ve not been able to go to the gym or take part in group sports over much of the last year, the advice is to gradually increase your rate of exercise and not expect to go straight back to pre-lockdown levels.

Weight management

Since March 2020, our consultants have seen a large increase in patients developing conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnoea, and polycystic ovarian syndrome, all of which are associated with weight gain.

Mr Sanjay Purkayastha, Gastrointestinal Surgeon at OneWelbeck Digestive Health, was instrumental in coining the term ‘covesity’, and is part of a multi-specialty team at OneWelbeck that can help anyone who’s seen significant weight gain (or loss) in the last year.
