Benefit of closing a Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) and reducing the risk of a stroke

Written by Dr Iqbal Malik

Three large trials in 2017 shows the benefit of looking for and closing a Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) in reducing the risk of a stroke AFTER you have had one. We do not look for a PFO unless you have had an event- be it a stroke, heart attack, or even the “bends” if you are a diver and have had decompression illness. There is no evidence on locating and closing it BEFORE you have an event.
It is a straightforward procedure which can be done as a day case. We hope to be able to offer at OneWelbeck Heart Health soon also. I currently perform them at Hammersmith Hospital, The Wellington and BUPA Cromwell Hospitals, and have been doing so for over 15 years.
